Guns and Gulaabs ( Netflix - 8 episodes , avg 50 mins except last episode )
Created by the gurus of Pulp and cool , Raj and DK . It is a gangster story set with the opium cultivation in a fictional town “gulab ganj” . It is set in the 90s - analog phones , audio cassettes ( with Jhankar beats and all ) . There is a lot that is going for the show ( the writer and cast pedigree) but I think overall it still feels a little misdirected and maybe a lot was left on the editing table . The woman characters are barely there , some whys and what’s are 😲.
However , if you somehow stay patient with it , the last two episodes are absolutely brilliant - almost like watching a movie ( you might as well just go on fast forward on other episodes to get to these two ) . This is where you get to see the superb screenplay and plotting which is a Raj and DK master class . The acting by the men is ok - Dulquer is ok without being great , Rajkumar Rao has probably done enough of these ( he is damn good, make no mistake ) , Gulshan Devaiah as “4 cut Atmaram” is superb , fun yet evil 🙂. This was also probably the last appearance of Satish Kaushik .
Do not miss the end credits after the episode 1 - lovely touch . Definitely not Raj and DKs best after Family man , Farzi , but can watch .
