Jawan - Hindi - 170 mins
Atlee as a director is known for being inspired by movies , themes , scenes , situations - repackaging them quite successfully in the movies, to give the audience a good time . He knows he is criticised for it , often trolled - but he is honest to his belief . His movies are a bunch of some really terrific scenes that stand alone ( and you will revisit many many times , Theri , Bigil , .. now Jawan as well ) - the movie on the whole is always a decent fun one time watch , logic aside - and that’s ok 🙂
Jawan is a director “Shankar” movie ( Atlee was Shankar’s AD) with the Atlee brand of elevating heroism to the T . It is the most “mass” movie of SRK to date -( Raees came close .) - he is absolutely jaw dropping in most scenes , especially as the Vikram Rathore ( just like Michael Rayappan in Bigil , this character deserves a movie of his own ) . He has a lot of fun as the cigar chomping, butt kicking Jawan . Taking the opportunity to voice his opinion on a lot of “current affairs”. The Lion King reference , baap beta dialogue brought the roof down ( and will be meming for sure ) - ( wonder why didn’t they have a villain named Sameer 🙂)
The entry scene - the pre intermission sequence and towards the end are 😲
The movie as a whole was moving too fast frame to frame ( so fast that in the same scene one of his gang of girls can change from straight hair and sarees to a money heist outfit and grunge hairstyle 😁). Why have so many girls if you don’t have a back story to tell for all :(. Nayanthara does what she already has in many Tamil movies , but it’s good part for her ( logic aside )
To his credit , Atlee - as a director/ writer always seems to come into his own in the second half, with good back stories and usually a strong woman character in it ( Nithya Menen in Mersal was memorable ) . Deepika ( got the second biggest cheer , after old SRK) - is absolutely superb in her part - her 20 mins is just a breeze. Vijay Sethupathi ( gets most meat in the second half ) is solid ( when he meets Deepika , boom ) , looks out of place with the makeup and hair !
This is easily Anirudh’s weakest work - the main theme song which plays through the score and keeps the tempo is ok - by his own lofty standards ( I can listen to just the Vikram score any time ) , the songs are below average ( he should have used other voices for Hindi )
As a movie goer , it is wonderful to see audiences queuing in theatres and having a good time - I largely did as well - because I kept expectations low 😇.
The cameo - I think the audience cheered more for the fact that it was a cameo than the actor ! I have respect for the actor - but I think it could have been someone else - and why would you give it away when you thank the actor in the opening credits !! . 😏
