Tamil cinema has had its fair share of serial killer and murder mysteries over the last decade. Some of my favourites have been Dhuruvangal Padhinaaru(DP), Ratsasan (an all-time classic), Imaikkaa Nodigal and more recently, Por Thozhil (my first blogpost!). This has always been one of my favourite genres.

With so many under my belt across languages and varying levels of ingenuity and storytelling, I have  become a bit cautious before picking my next one. I usually do some careful reading (the internet being both a blessing and a spoiler minefield!) to sift through credible reviews before committing to a watch. The early reactions to Eleven were decent enough for me to take the plunge.

The movie started off in fairly generic fashion. We are introduced to a mysterious killer amidst pouring rain, dragging a victim into a wooded area. He wears a mask that’s somewhere between Halloween and Scream, he shoots and burns his victims to prevent identification. All of this unfolds over a "I may have heard it before" background score.

A super cop, investigating a drug case, is pulled into the serial killer investigation when the original officer on the case is abruptly taken off—while also meeting with an unfortunate accident. There is a painfully cringeworthy performance by the female lead, who feels like a needless distraction.

I was just beginning to regret my decision to watch this well past midnight, when things took a turn—around the 35-minute mark, the film finally began to dig its heels in with good pacing and investigation thereafter.  In good time, the unique “why” unravelled and suddenly i was invested in finding the who.

With about 20 minutes to go, I had confidently figured out the killer and was preparing to write this off as a "decent but not worth writing about" watch. But the final act managed to humble me—and here we are!

Written and directed by debutant Lokesh Ajjls, Eleven may tread familiar ground, but it still manages to carve out its own identity with a unique premise and a rather clever twist (or two). So kudos to Lokesh—hopefully we see more of his work and he does not fade away like Karthick Naren(the wonderboy behind DP)

Naveen Chandra as the super cop does a decent job—possibly his first proper lead role in Tamil. Beyond that, the acting is fairly generic. The most recognisable faces in the cast are Abhirami and Aadukalam Naren (in a cookie-cutter DGP role). The rest of the cast seem to be just filling the numbers. Imman’s background score is ok, the main hook does start to grow on you after a while.

If this script had been mentored by a seasoned director and featured a stronger cast, Eleven might have found a place among the genre’s modern greats I mentioned earlier. Still, it just about earns its place as one of 2025’s potential dark horses in Tamil cinema—and is worth a watch if you are a fan of the genre.
