Por Thozhil ( The art of war)Tamil - 144 mins , Sony Liv - Crime, Thriller
One of the best Tamil movies of 2023. It follows the serial killer egoistic senior cop ( Sarath Kumar , with PS1 and PS2, in the middle of a purple patch ) and a brilliant rookie ( Ashok Selvan , his current movie choices are top notch ) text book to the T.
After the initial bits , the movie zooms at breakneck speed . No songs , distractions and stays true to its genre . The two leads are brilliant , one is stoic and to the task and the other is a scared wannabee!
The dread and tension is sustained beautifully in the middle portion of the movie - with another wonderful character actor who passed away just recently - you see the character , but you also see the man probably knowing very well that he is approaching his last days .
Every scene ( including the few that setup the premise ) lead up to something else in the movie , so it’s very tightly edited - with excellent cinematography and fortunately not a very bombastic score - minimal mostly
.The eventual reveal was good but definitely not the “ Ratsasan” way , that and the not so well defined screen time for the female character, are probably the only “could be better” things in the movie , which otherwise almost rivals “Ratsasan” and “Dhuruvangal pathinaaru” in the crime, serial killer genre in Tamil . Don’t miss !
