An October day in the Interlaken region

We recently visited Zurich to celebrate two decades of our first meeting in this enchanting city. To fully immerse ourselves in its beauty, we spent a leisurely day exploring the city's charming streets and iconic landmarks. Our stay at the cozy El Silencio Airbnb, conveniently located near the city center, provided easy access to public transportation and local amenities

We had planned a day trip around Interlaken. Despite the late autumn season, we were fortunate to have clear weather.
  • We started early to take the 5:40 am tram to make the 6:02 AM train from Zurich HB to Interlaken Ost. It was quite dark even as the sun was barely peaking through the low clouds hovering over the serene Lake Thun. From Interlaken, another train connects to Grindelwald First Train station. Another 10 min walk (or a bus, if you make it on time) took us to the First Cable car station, from where we took the 25 min cable car ride to Grindelwald First (reach by about 9:30 am).
  • Welcomed by stunning views of the Eiger and other giants of  the Bernese Oberland and with the weather being good, we trudged along on the well defined path on the 50 min walk to Bachalpsee. The round trip with some break for a short breakfast picnic/ pictures will expect to take about 2.5 hours.  On return, we made our way to the Cliff walk, which gives you an opportunity to walk across the ridge for great pictures. This location also has the restaurant/restrooms and gift shop which are all quite good.
  • If you are adventurous and have a little more time on hand, there are whole bunch of fun things in Grindelwald First (check for open times).
  • Our next stop was Lauterbrunnen, a picturesque village nestled among towering cliffs. We admired the majestic Staubbach Falls and took a leisurely stroll (and lovely hot chocolate!) through the town.
  • To conclude our day trip, we returned to Interlaken and strolled along the Hoheweg, a charming street lined with shops, restaurants, and hotels. The stunning backdrop of the Jungfrau mountain added to the magic of this idyllic town.
  • We took the 5:52pm train back to Zurich, HB  to get back our AirBnB at 8:15pm, having walked almost 16 km, but wonderful memories for life!
Tickets - We were travelling around for only one day, so the Half Fare card didn't make sense for us. The Saver Day pass worked out well (Purchased advance Online for 59 CHF each). The cable car cost 34 CHF return per person (the Saver day pass works as a GA card, so you get 50% on the Cable car) (this was purchased at the cable car stations).

You cannot get lost! - Clear signs all along
