Slow Horses (Season 4)

Eng / Spy /Thriller
6 Episodes / 45 mins approx.
Apple TV+

One of my first blog posts was a review of Season 3  early this year. As I completed another fast paced, crisp and engaging season, I reaffirm my recommendation of this show. I doff my hat to the dialogue (edgy, raspy, dry wit), which along with  the solid acting from the entire cast, elevates this season, despite its very good, but predictable plot.

The show starts with a suicide bombing at a Shopping centre. In a parallel thread, David Cartwright ( Jonathan Pryce ) is attacked by his grandson’s River Cartwright's (Jack Lowden) doppelgänger. David is able to thwart the attack and blow the guys face beyond recognition.

Jackson Lamb ( Gary Oldman ) and his Slow Horses investigate the attack on the  Senior Cartwright, while the Mi5 led by Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) investigates the suicide bombing. As it turns out, the seemingly unconnected events point to Frank Harkness ( Hugo Weaving), who has set into motion these events with something much bigger in play.

Hugo Weaving is perfectly cast and is simply outstanding, with his trademark dialogue and cold demeanour. James Callis as Claude Whelan as the new Mi5 head, seemingly plays a bumbling man with a past. The regulars all do a fine job with the Jonathan Pryce getting a lot more screen time as the aging man, struggling with his reality and his past!

This season ends with the peek of  more to come! From the first season, we have always lost a member of the Slow Horses. No exception this time as well, as we lose another strong character.  Perhaps the show will go on until Jackson Lamb is the last man standing!
