Silo - "Surface" Tension

Silo - 10 episodes (avg 45 mins) - Apple TV+, Sci Fi, Dystopia

One of my favourite genres — dystopian sci-fi.

Silo stars Mrs. Impossible herself, Rebecca Ferguson (aka Tom Cruise’s partner-in-crime in the last three Mission: Impossible movies), alongside Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption), Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Jack Taylor), and a solid supporting cast. With some well-known next-gen directors headlining the show, watching it was never a question of if, just when.

The first couple of episodes take their time setting up the premise: in the future, 10,000 people live in an underground silo built across multiple levels, governed by a strict law known as “The Pact”. This set of rules controls everyday life — from relationships and having children to owning possessions.

Every decision is tightly regulated, and any transgression is met with the harshest penalty: being sent outside — a fate tantamount to death. Those exiled are forced to “clean” the sensors before they inevitably die, while the rest of the silo watches the broadcast in horror (and faint hope) on screens installed on every level.

Juliette (Ferguson), who oversees the generator down in the Mechanical level, becomes the silo’s new Sheriff through an unexpected turn of events. As she investigates a series of mysterious deaths, she begins to uncover a deeper truth about what might really be going on. After a slow but essential start in the first two episodes, the show quickly picks up pace. While the story probably could’ve been told in two fewer episodes, it’s still a solid and compelling watch.

The acting is strong throughout — I especially hope we see more of Iain Glen in Season 2. The only weak link is rapper/actor Common, whose performance is one-note at best. You can’t tell if he just walked in from The Matrix, John Wick, or anything else he’s ever done — same clothes, same shrug, same expression. It’s baffling why he continues to be cast.

The production design and world-building (the layered levels, social structure, and rules) are exceptional. The season ends with a clear setup for Season 2. A quick look at the wiki reveals that Silo is based on a trilogy of novels, so we can likely expect three seasons.

If you’re a fan of the genre and ready to commit to another two seasons, definitely give this one a shot.
