DUNKI - 2 hr 41 mins - Hindi

The “Munnabhai” movies, 3 idiots -  three movies which will easily fit into any “all time” Hindi movie list.    The success has been  everlasting because they  have tremendous repeat value - one could always slide 20/30 mins of those movies ANY TIME of the DAY.  This made you believe  In Raju Hirani  (RH)

PK - was a well made satire - I felt that it had much lesser “repeat” moments and little high on drama for the stuff we were used to from RH - but you still believe!.  I don’t know why Sanju was made ( friendly thank you for Sanju to clean up his image perhaps?) -  but I watched it for Ranbir’s acting. ( did RH have to make this movie ?)

Dunki - Given that SRK should have featured in Munnabhai and was offered 3 idiots!, natural for people to look forward to it.  I wasn’t much enthused when the promos came out - but I still believed in RH

I went with zero expectations and even then one feels massively let down.

The premise is maybe far too serious to expect humour to be weaved in (but you believe in RH and his writers)- You barely register anything from the movie - there are 3/4 sequences which are very good, but I don’t think have the same repeat value .  The  actual “Dunki” sequences are quite watered down and too filmy  , more so if the intent was up the drama quotient - In fact, the feature in the epilogue actually makes more impact! -

The Music is ok and very situational - typical  of a Raju Hirani movie - will you listen to it otherwise - perhaps not. Art direction is nice , especially in one song. VFX - lol:)( the underwater sequence 😏)

Vicky Kaushal is superb in his special appearance, such a solid actor. Taapsee is good - (for some strange reason her make up makes her look pale, older), but definitely expected one or two big scenes for her, which don’t happen.   SRK’s punjabi accent is up and down ( can’t decide if Aamir’s accent in LSG was worse!, maybe it was the “hmm” ). SRK does the drama scenes well - but does not get enough situational comedy/humor,  which I think everyone was looking forward to.

A common thread in all of the “Raju Hirani” classics has been  Boman Irani -  He gets barely a few scenes - probably sums up why the movie ends up  very “Duuuuh”nkee.  (And makes you realise how much his character adds in the classics)

It is a still a  decent family movie - clean, some good scenes and drama , an easy one time watch. With the year that SRK has had - may well do decent business - but for the gray scaled dinosaur :) opening the same weekend.
