Kuttram Purindhavan is a very watchable limited series, once one gets past the first three episodes. The initial stretch takes its time setting up the emotional core and leans heavily on Pasupathy the actor to hold your attention. His presence is compelling without doubt, this emphasis contributes to a stop-start narrative.

However, the series takes a decisive and confident turn in Episode 4. From that point onward, the writing and direction by debutant Selvamani Muniyappan truly shine. It is a shift in both pace and purpose. As the skeletons begin to emerge, the story tightens and the narrative ambition is finally realised.

The central incident involves a young girl, Mercy, who goes missing. Initial investigations hint at possible connections to two similar disappearances in nearby towns. Her mother, Esther, is distraught, especially as her husband is also found dead on the same night. Living next door is Baskaran (Pasupathy), a kind-hearted pharmacist who serves as a father figure to Esther.

Baskaran and his wife are grandparents to a young boy, Rahul, who suffers from a serious medical condition requiring urgent surgery. Recently retired, Baskaran is awaiting his retirement settlement to fund the procedure, as time is rapidly running out for Rahul. Unable to remain detached, Baskaran is inevitably drawn into the search for Mercy.

Running parallel to this is Gowtham (Vidharth), a policeman who has been demoted to the role of driver and handyman for the DGP as a punishment posting. As the investigation deepens, these two men, burdened by regret stemming from their own misjudgements, end up working together. The case becomes a means of redemption for both.

This is where the title Kuttram Purindhavan finds its true meaning. Culpability is not framed as a binary of guilt and innocence, but as something far more human and complex. The presentation feels like the work of a seasoned storyteller than that of a debutant, and credit is due to Selvamani Muniyappan.

Pasupathy, as expected, is exceptional. Coming off a superb performance in Bison, His performance in the first half dominates the series. His mastery of “eye acting” alone deserves to be studied in acting schools. He communicates moral conflict, fear, and compassion beyond dialogue.

When Vidharth properly enters the narrative, in a role and situation he has explored before, he once again proves his competence as an understated hero. The dynamic between the two actors truly shines in the sequences leading up to their collaboration.

The supporting cast also deserves mention. Lizzie Antony, as Baskaran’s wife Anandi, is given considerable scope in the early episodes and makes good use of it. Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli, as Esther, delivers a mature and controlled performance. Both women ground the series emotionally, preventing it from becoming a purely male-centric redemption tale.

From a craft perspective, the series is well mounted, though the editing could have been significantly tighter in the first thirty percent. With sharper trimming, the story might have comfortably fit into five episodes instead of its current length.

Kuttram Purindhavan also reinforces why SonyLIV has quietly become one of the more interesting platforms for Indian content. It may not match the larger players in volume, but its commitment to offbeat themes, grounded storytelling, and content-driven series offers consistently strong value.

In the end, Kuttram Purindhavan is a series that rewards patience. It is not flawless, but it is sincere, well-acted, and thematically coherent. More importantly, it understands that redemption is rarely immediate. It arrives slowly, through shared burden, moral reckoning, and the quiet act of choosing to do the right thing.
