It is April Fool’s Day — Abhimanyu Sood (Sohum Shah) hauls a bag full of cash into his Range Rover. At 5 PM, he sits in his car, collecting his thoughts, when his phone rings — someone on the other end is waiting for the money drop. As he starts driving, his phone rings again — this time, it’s a ransom call: his daughter has been kidnapped.

Over the next 90 minutes, as the action unfolds almost in real time, we learn that Abhimanyu is a successful surgeon who went through a bitter divorce from his first wife, Bobby (Nimisha Sajayan). His raunchy girlfriend (Shilpa Shukla) smells a rat and warns him to be wary of the ransom demand. Meanwhile, the original intended recipient of the cash keeps calling relentlessly, reminding him that time is running out. Anything more would serve as spoilers!

Sohum Shah is the only actor we see on screen; the others contribute through voice performances. He delivers a bravura performance, keeping us hooked throughout. Over time, we get to witness all the good, bad, and ugly sides of Abhimanyu Sood, he is so good! The cinematography is superb, the thrilling driving sequences (largely performed by Sohum himself), the pulsing background score by Jesper Kyd, and the punchy background songs all come together to successfully hold our attention.

Interestingly, two endings were shot, and the current one was changed after audience feedback on the first day of release. I would have loved to see the original ending, because I felt that the final version was a little off compared to the general tone of the movie.

Barring this tonal shift, Crazxy marks a strong directorial debut for Girish Kohli (previously the writer of Mom and Kesari). Kudos once again to Sohum Shah for backing another genre-defining project — one that I feel will find its audience, especially on streaming.
