A Real Pain is written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, who also stars as David Kaplan—a New Yorker living a seemingly stable life with a wife and young child. He reunites with his cousin, Benji Kaplan (Kieran Culkin), as they embark on a trip to Poland to visit their recently deceased grandmother’s home and pay tribute to their Jewish ancestry.

The cousins, very close while growing up, have clearly drifted apart. David has become a responsible family man, while Benji is more free-spirited, living without a steady job or clear direction. As part of a guided tour, they meet others traveling through key sites in Warsaw and visit concentration camps, retracing the haunting legacy of the Holocaust.

Throughout the journey, the cousins struggle to reconnect and make up for lost time. Benji frequently accuses David of having “changed,” while David finds it difficult to accept Benji’s vagabond lifestyle. As the tour progresses, Benji’s erratic behavior begins to worry David—culminating in an emotional breakdown, where David expresses guilt for not being there when Benji needed him the most.

Kieran Culkin initially gives off strong Roman Roy vibes at the beginning, before settling into a deeply emotional and heart-wrenching performance—earning him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Jesse Eisenberg plays David with restraint for much of the film, before a powerful emotional moment in the final act. His breakdown in the hotel following Benji’s drunken outburst is especially moving.

Kieran has several standout moments -  the contrast between his playful photo session with fellow tourists in Warsaw and the emotionally charged scene aboard the first-class train to Lublin summarizes his performance. 

The film is a poignant exploration of brotherhood, grief, and reconciliation. With a tight runtime, two deeply committed performances and authentic chemistry between the leads, A Real Pain is a touching and worthwhile emotional experience.
