This series is a long form adaptation of Frederick Forsyth's thrilling 1971 novel about a cold, cunning, hard to track assassin and the British intelligence trying to stop him from taking out a very high profile target.

Set in modern times, the series overall manages to thrill, with good use of technology, make up and finally some old school technique (and the solid source material). This time, the Jackal (Eddie Redmayne) has been hired by a conglomerate to terminate an Elon Musk like personality UDC (Khalid Abdalla, played Dodi al fayed in The Crown), who is about to bring parity to the world with his program "The River" (we don’t know HOW, despite hearing the term a zillion times!)

The Jackal is furiously pursued by MI-6 agent Bianca (Lashana Lynch), a gun expert. (although we aren’t really shown her pedigree otherwise), who is fighting her own battles both at work and at home.

The 1970’s adaptation starring Edward Fox as the titular character was a fast paced, hold your breath thriller that was truer to the book (which I prefer as well). Of course, it did not have any time to explore the emotional lives of the principle characters. This series gives plenty (rather too much) of sub plots for the emotional depth.  The Jackal lives in a Spanish town with his wife Nuria Ursula Corbero (Tokyo from Money Heist) and their young son. Bianca’s familial situation consumes some needless run time. There is also another meandering subplot involving one of her informers. All of these bloat the 3,4,5 episodes before the real plot  kicks in.

Eddie Redmayne is a solid actor.  Much like our very own Hrithik Roshan, I feel sometimes he does more in a scene than necessary. The unnecessary twitch, the needless shiver or shrug or shoulder grab.  Nevertheless, he is very good overall. Cold and calculated when he needed and emotional and vulnerable around his family.

Ursula Corbero gets a really solid role and  does a very good job. Lashana Lynch is ok, a little one tone but does what is required as the pursuer.

The last 4 episodes is when the series really kicks into overdrive and brings back the old school cat and mouse thriller. Fantastic car chases, thrilling shoot outs, sniper sequences and a solid confrontation at the end. There is wonderful cinematography covering the exotic European locations, showcasing the high production value. The pulsing background score and use of british rock music is cool.

Overall – it is a good adaptation, could have easily been about 3 episodes thinner. I will recommend watching the  original film – after you finish this, so you know why I felt what I did, when i watched this one.
