Anatomy of a Fall - English/French / Drama - 140 mins - Prime Video
One of the movies nominated for Best Picture Oscars in 2024. The female lead Sandra Huller was also nominated for Best Actress. The movie is an absorbing drama, constructed over the premise of a wife being the prime accused in the death of a failed novelist, with their partially blind son being the key witness!
The movie is a take on how humans may be overcome by their perceptions, potentially at the cost of reality. The movie is rather long ( i think a 10/20 min edit would have been nicer), but essentially the screenplay is like out of a Quentin Tarantino work - Long scenes with arresting dialogue and cameras panned constantly on the expressive faces of the actors.
The acting by Sandra Huller is superb. Switching between French and English (she is german, living in France with her French husband and not completely fluent in French), effortlessly, surrendering to the fact that she is but an obvious suspect. She is also protective of her son, wanting to shield him from any potential revelations on her relationship with her husband, which may impact his memories / relationship with his father!
The son Daniel is darn good, appearing to be fairly maturely handling the ordeal, eventually showing his vulnerability that he is after all just a young boy! There is also a dog (Snoop), which has one absolutely stunning piece of acting ( i dont know how they made it act !), which blows your mind!
Overall - The movie is more a human behavioural drama than a thriller that is meant to be. Still a good watch, without being mind blowing.
