Chittha - Tamil, 140 mins - Hotstar - Drama
Chittha (paternal uncle) is a story of Eswaran (Siddharth) and his father like relationship with his niece Ponni ( Aafiyah Tasneem) and what transpires when she is missing.
Siddharth is absolutely awesome in this career defining performance. He conveys, possessiveness, love and eventually pain, frustration and desperation for his niece - face, trembles in his voice, spot on.
The kid Ponni (Aafiyah Tasneem) and another child actor Sundari (Sahasra sree) - Ponni’s best friend are so good in the movie! - It is all ok for getting children to probably act the parts where they have to look like and act like kids!, but can’t imagine how they are coached into more dramatic and grim sequences - bravo!
The support cast is good - the sister in law, the friend who is a cop (and Sundari’s uncle), Nimisha Sajayan (Great Indian Kitchen) is there and her scenes are good - though I did not quite see the need/relevance of her character and the romantic angle in context of the main plot.
Not an easy watch, given the theme (without any further spoilers ) - but a terrific movie, certainly one of 2023’s best! Kudos also to Siddharth for independently backing some really diverse content through his productions.
